KC ramblings…
So, the 8-day trip with Sofie to visit the KC clan went well. Sofie is clearly going to be a great traveler. Except for a few wailing outbreaks and a big spitup on the way home (nothing we haven’t all done at some point), she was cute, calm, and collected.
And she got her wings!
It was a LOT of work, and a very exhausting trip for me… for Sofie, too, as she seemed to sleep longer through the KC nights. I’m glad everyone got to meet the object of their prayers and admiration the past half year. I firmly believe it’s all of the good thoughts sent from around the country to Sofie during her fight in the NICU that got her to this strong, happy point in her life.
Mom not only COOKED, she cooked twice in two days! And not just cooked, but grilled one day! And E. made homemade chicken tamales that were amazing. And coconut cake. And pineapple upside-down cake. E’s a very talented cook. I’m glad she’s found her niche. (E.: not to be confused with El. El makes a mean bean though!) It touched me greatly how much everyone contributed to creating nice events for Sofie and me.
Shacking up with Aunt El was good, unless you ask Cousin Kiki. She didn’t seem to like what she perceived as cute competition from Sofie.

El and I went to see:

It was amazing! Check out the set list below. Had fun with a couple of El’s friends, and a couple of new friends. Ozzy, a strapping friendly English bloke, saved me and my concert view from a couple of idiot dudes who stepped in front of me. In appreciation, I bought him and his wife a pint of good cheer, and life was good. El made her way to the front row (I was about 8 rows back). Nothing beats going to a great concert with and surrounded by folks as equally into it. It was flat-out fun.
It was mighty keen to hear Morrissey perform “How Soon Is Now?” and “International Playboys.” The real surprise of the night was hearing Kristeen Young. I wasn’t familiar with her before this show. Now, I’m a total fan. Sounds kinda like the love child of Kate Bush and Siouxsie Sioux, with a little Tori Amos thrown in. Amazing.
Wrapped up the week with dinner at S&B’s. Got to meet little Anthony. Absolutely adorable! Pictures don’t do him justice. Also hit El Sombrero, my late grandmother’s restaurant, now (actually, even while Grandma was still around) run by Uncle Larry and Aunt Jeannie. Aunt J kindly treated us to lunch. OH SO GOOD!!! I still think about that last bite of beans I could not finish. What I wouldn’t give to have them now! MMMMM. And the pork/bean burrito topped with cheese spread and Mexican chili. OMG.
Although a lot of work, I’m glad I went.
I just wish I hadn’t lost all my pictures! I think I downloaded them onto El’s laptop and put them on a memory stick. But I can’t find the stick. :( Hopefully, El will find them?
(Help, El, help!)

Leaving on a jet plane
Well, this time tomorrow, Sofie and I will be on a plane heading to KC to visit the familia. T. gets to stay home and sleep through the night for a week before heading off to Montana to visit M.’s new property in fly-fishing paradise.
I’ve always been one of those people on the plane who, when seeing an adult board with an infant/child, PRAY quite audibly that I hope they don’t sit near me.
Now, I’m going to be one of those parents I wanted to avoid. And what will I do about Sofie’s milk? And how will I change her on the plane? And what if she’s inconsolable? Afterall, she *has* been a little more temperamental the past few days. I’ve been anxious about just going to the store with her, let alone traveling half-way across the country. I got Sofie her own seat in hopes that will help us both be more comfy. And I’m prepared to do battle with any person sitting in front of us who dares to recline their seat back.
Wish I had thought ahead of time to purchase this:
On the flip side, I’m excited to be initiating her to the world of travel so young. Many adventures await us in far away places, so might as well get her traveling legs in gear.
We’ll be staying with Aunt E. Many thanks to her and Aunt B. for setting up our home away from home, making it comfy for Sofie. And thanks, too, to Aunt J. for meeting and greeting us!
Happy trails to us…
